MizuTrans internship report by Dane デインのインターンレポート1

It has been exactly one month since I started my internship in Japan at a
translation company called MizuTrans corporation, and I can genuinely say it has been a true delight to get to experience interning for this company. When first arriving, I was extremely nervous about working in a completely foreign land where I wasn’t quite sure of the rules on the business side of things. However my nerves were quickly calmed upon meeting Mizu-san, Hiro-san, and Yumi-san. I was welcomed by smiling faces and warm hospitality, along with a quick introduction about some of the duties I would be performing while staying here. While I adjusted to daily life in Fukuoka and the company, they helped me learn a few phrases that I would be using frequently in the office, such as shitsurei shimasu, and otsukaresama deshita. A few of my duties have included proofreading and correcting some of the translators reports, e-filing different types of paperwork and business cards, working on a presentation of my own, and helping to move/clean different spaces in the office.

Working in the office

One of my favorite days so far was when a group of the translators and I went on a trip to Yanagawa and Dazaifu. That day started very early, with all of us meeting at the Fukuoka airport at 8am. After a quick tour around the airport we were off to Yanagawa. I really enjoyed touring around Yanagawa because it gave me a chance to get to know some of the translators that I hadn’t previously met, as well as see more of the rural side of Japan. While there, and at Dazaifu, I also got the chance to learn some more Japanese phrases and vocabulary, while also learning more about the history of some Japanese legends, such as the story of Izanami and Izanagi, and Sugawara Michizane.

While living here in Fukuoka I have had the chance to visit a few places like Miyajidake shrine and Canal city Hakata.I also had the pleasure of stumbling upon an owl cafe in downtown Tenjin. Unfortunately a lot of the places I would like to visit are currently closed because of the coronavirus situation, although I’m hopeful that they will reopen before I make my departure in May. I would love to visit some of the temples in Kyoto, as well as Universal Studios Japan in Osaka and Tokyo Disney in Tokyo. I would also like to visit Fukuoka tower and the Studio Ghibli museum.

Miyajidake Shrine

I have really enjoyed my time here, and wouldn’t change a thing about my
experience so far. I am greatly looking forward to my remaining 2 months and learning even more Japanese, as well as meet even more amazing people. The time I have spent at the company is invaluable , and I would recommend using their services to anyone who is thinking about coming to Japan!
